In 2006 I started talking about Obesongenic’s in our society and how they were making
people all over the world fat! Now it seems that everybody is talking about it… So I
figured I would refresh your memories on the subject of if this is your first time reading
about this subject as informative as possible so that you can get these items out of your
life for good.
It's easy enough to find culprits in the nation's epidemic of obesity, starting with tubs of
buttered popcorn at the multiplex and McDonald's 1,220-calorie deluxe breakfasts, and
moving on to the couch potatofication of America. Potent as they are, however, these
causes cannot explain the ballooning of one particular segment of the population, a
segment that doesn't go to movies, can't chew, and was never that much into exercise:
babies. In 2006 scientists at the Harvard School of Public Health reported that the
prevalence of obesity in infants under 6 months had risen 73 percent since 1980. "This
epidemic of obese 6-month-olds," as endocrinologist Robert Lustig of the University of
California, San Francisco, calls it, poses a problem for conventional explanations of the
fattening of America. "Since they're eating only formula or breast milk, and never exactly
got a lot of exercise, the obvious explanations for obesity don't work for babies," he
points out. "You have to look beyond the obvious." So, soon later we find out that
PLASTIC BOTTLES AND BABY FOOD THAT IS CANNED, have BPA’s. ( this is what wiki has
to say on BPA Bisphenol A, commonly abbreviated as BPA, is an organic compound with
two phenol functional groups used to make polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins,
along with other applications.

Known to be estrogenic since the mid 1930s, concerns about the use of bisphenol A in
consumer products were regularly reported in the news media in 2008 after several
governments issued reports questioning its safety, thus prompting some retailers to
remove products containing it from their shelves. A 2010 report from the United States
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) raised further concerns regarding exposure of
fetuses, infants, and young children.[1])

About 60 percent of Americans are overweight or obese, and their health-care costs are
higher: $3,400 in annual spending for a normal-weight adult versus $4,870 for an obese
adult, mostly due to their higher levels of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other
conditions. If those outsize costs inspire greater efforts to prevent and treat obesity,
fine. But if they lead to demonizing the obese—caricaturing them as indolent pigs
raising insurance premiums for the rest of us—that's a problem, and not only for ethical
reasons: it threatens to obscure that one potent cause of weight gain may be largely
beyond an individual's control.

This is where this topic needs to be addressed by every individual… On May 11, 2010
the White House announced it was targeting a new threat to America’s health and
security. It wasn’t some rogue nation or terrorist organization, or a newfound disease or
environmental threat. It was a class of chemicals that are making Americans fat. They’re
called endocrine disrupting chemicals, or EDCs. And chances are you’re eating or
drinking them right now.
. The presence of EDCs in our environment raises concerns because:
•        harmful effects have been observed on reproduction, growth and development in
certain species of wildlife,
•        there are increases in some human reproductive disorders and some cancers
which could be related to disturbance of the endocrine system, and
•        adverse effects from some environmental chemicals known to act on the
endocrine system have been observed in laboratory animals.

The White House Task Force on Childhood Obesity released a report called "Solving the
Problem of Childhood Obesity Within a Generation." In the report they list endocrine-
disrupting chemicals as a possible reason for increased obesity in the country and
describe how scientists have coined a new term for these chemicals — "obesogens" —
because they "may promote weight gain and obesity."
DUDE SCIENTISTS COINED THE TERM?? HELLO!! I TALKED ABOUT THIS IN 2006! But if you
didn’t read it then, read this now and get yourself away from these FAT PRODUCING
THINGS IN YOUR ENVIRONMENT. You will be surprised to see that all of a sudden you
will start losing weight!

If you don’t get these products out of your life…..What does this mean for you? It means
that weight gain is not just about calories-in versus calories-out. It means you will not be
able to lose weight without taking these products out of your life!

Most obesogens are of natural and synthetic compounds, and many of these chemicals
work by mimicking estrogen — the very hormone that doctors DON’T want women taking
anymore (as a large clinical trial linked hormone therapy to increased risk of heart
disease, breast cancer, stroke, blood clots and abnormal mammograms). Not to mention
weight gain!!!!

Why traditional diets don’t work anymore for you….

Because high school biology was likely a while back, here’s a quick refresher: The
endocrine system is made up of all the glands and cells that produce the hormones that
regulate our bodies. Growth and development, sexual function, reproductive
processes, mood, sleep, hunger, stress, metabolism and the way our bodies use food —
it’s all controlled by hormones. So whether you’re tall or short, lean or heavy — that’s all
determined in a big way by your endocrine system.

But your endocrine system is a finely tuned instrument that can easily be thrown off-
kilter. "Obesogens are thought to act by hijacking the regulatory systems that control
body weight," says Frederick vom Saal, Ph.D., curators’ professor of biological sciences
at the University of Missouri. That’s why endocrine disruptors are so good at making us
fat — and that’s why diet advice doesn’t always work — because even strictly following
the smartest traditional advice won’t lower your obesogen exposure. See, an apple a
day may have kept the doctor away 250 years ago when Benjamin Franklin included the
phrase in his almanac. But if that apple comes loaded with obesity-promoting chemicals
— nine of the ten most commonly used pesticides are obesogens, and apples are one of
the most pesticide-laden foods out there — then Ben’s advice is way out of date.

The obesogen effect is the reason why traditional diet advice — choose chicken over
beef, eat more fish, load up on fruits and vegetables — may not work anymore. This is
why we’re calling for a New American Diet.

See, while digging up all of this research on obesogens we’ve discovered some good
news: There’s no reason why all of our favorite foods — from steak to burgers, from
pasta to ice cream — can’t be part of a reasonable weight-loss program. We just need to
get rid of old thinking. We can reverse the obesogen effect if we simply adopt these
simple laws of skinnyness:

Skinnyness Law No. 1: Know When to Go Organic
The average American is exposed to 10 to 13 different pesticides through food,
beverages and drinking water every day and nine of the ten most common pesticides
are EDCs. But according to a recent study in the journal Environmental Health
Perspectives, eating an organic diet for just five days can reduce circulating pesticide
EDCs to non-detectable or near non-detectable levels. Yes, you read that right!! You can
reduce pesticides in your system and get out some of those fat causing EDC’s by just
eating organic. I talk a lot about eating ‘clean”,(
click here to read more about eating
clean.. It will come up in another window for easy viewing.)

Of course, organic foods can be expensive. But not all organics are created equal—
many foods have such low levels of pesticides that buying organic just isn’t worth it.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) calculated that you can reduce your pesticide
exposure nearly 80 percent simply by choosing organic for the 12 fruits and vegetables
shown in their tests to contain the highest levels of pesticides. They call them "The Dirty
Dozen," and (starting with the worst) they are celery, peaches, strawberries, apples,
blueberries (domestic), nectarines, sweet bell peppers, spinach, kale/collard greens,
cherries, potatoes and grapes (imported). And you can feel good about buying the
following 15 conventionally grown fruits and vegetables that the EWG dubbed "The
Clean Fifteen," because they were shown to have little pesticide residue: onions,
avocado, sweet corn (frozen), pineapples, mango, sweet peas (frozen), asparagus, kiwi
fruit, cabbage, eggplant, cantaloupe (domestic), watermelon, grapefruit, sweet potatoes
and honeydew melon.

Skinnyness Law No. 2: Don’t Eat Plastic
Okay, now I know you are not eating plastic, but this one needs to be stated on the
skinny laws. Indeed, you’re probably already thinking, Well, I don’t generally eat plastic.
Ah, but you do. Chances are that you’re among the 93 percent of Americans with
detectable levels of bisphenol-A (BPA) in their bodies, and that you’re also among the 75
percent of Americans with detectable levels of phthalates. Both are synthetic chemicals
found in plastics that mimic estrogen — essentially, artificial female hormones. And like
pesticides, these plastic-based chemicals trick our bodies into storing fat and not
building or retaining muscle. Decreasing your exposure to plastic-based obesogens will
maximize your chances both of losing unwanted flab and of building lean muscle mass.
Here’s how: 1) Never heat food in plastic containers or put plastic items in the
dishwasher, which can damage them and increase leaching. BPA leaches from
polycarbonate sports bottles 55 times faster when exposed to boiling liquids as
opposed to cold ones, according to a study in the journal Toxicology Letters. 2) Avoid
buying fatty foods like meats that are packaged in plastic wrap because EDCs are stored
in fatty tissue. The plastic wrap used at the supermarket is mostly PVC, whereas the
plastic wrap you buy to wrap things at home is increasingly made from polyethylene. 3)
Cut down on canned goods by choosing tuna in a pouch over canned tuna. And get any
canned and jarred foods from Eden Organic, one of the only companies that doesn’t
have BPA in its cans.

Look for the codes on the bottom of plastic, if they have a 3 or a 7 don’t purchase this
product it probably has BPA’s. If it has a 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 they are lower or don’t have any BPA’
s inside the plastics at all. Hey listen they took this out of baby bottles finding so many
links to this and childhood obesity and cancer.
On the same note of don’t eat plastic, don’t breath it in either… Do you have a vinyl
shower curtain? Well, take it out! Vinyl has PCB’s and when they get hot they also get
into your skin and lungs and create weight gain, because this chemical slows down your
metabolism.

Air freshners that have fragrances in them can contain Phthalates, or phthalate esters,
are esters of phthalic acid and are mainly used as plasticizers (substances added to
plastics to increase their flexibility, transparency, durability, and longevity). They are
used primarily to soften polyvinyl chloride. Phthalates are being phased out of many
products in the United States, Canada, and European Union over health concerns.

Skinnyness Law No. 3: Go Lean
If you are going to eat meat, try to eat pasture-raised meats, which, studies show, have
less fat than their confined, grain-fed counterparts and none of the weight-promoting
hormones. Plus, grass-fed beef contains 60 percent more omega-3s, 200 percent more
vitamin E and two to three times more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA, a near-magic
nutrient that helps ward off heart disease, cancer and diabetes, and can help you lose
weight, according to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition) than
conventional beef. If you must choose a conventional cut of beef, choose lean cuts top
sirloin, 95 percent lean ground beef, bottom round roast, eye round roast, top round
roast or sirloin tip steak. Bison burgers and veggie burgers are also great substitutes
when grass-fed beef isn’t available. And select sustainable lean fish with low toxic loads
(meaning low levels of toxins like mercury and PCBs). A study in the journal
Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that even though the pesticide DDT
was banned in 1973, the chemical and its breakdown product DDE can still be found
today in fatty fish. Bigger fish eat smaller fish, and so carry a much higher toxic load.
Also, don’t buy your meats packed in plastic, as discussed above they have BPA’s
especially industrial packaging as in the supermarkets. Go to the butcher and have him
wrap your meat in paper… This is an easy step and most people don’t even think about
the plastic on your fruits and fish and such…. When shopping try to pick fruit yourself
and go for the brown bags. Save the environment and yourself.
Avoid ahi or bigeye tuna, tilefish, swordfish, shark, king mackerel, marlin and orange
roughy — and focus on smaller fish like anchovies, Atlantic herring and mackerel, and
wild-caught Alaskan salmon. Choose farmed rainbow trout, farmed mussels, anchovies,
scallops (bay, farmed), Pacific cod, Pacific Halibut, Tuna (canned light) and mahimahi.
Also, when you cook the fish, broil, poach, grill, boil or bake instead of pan-frying — this
will allow contaminants from the fatty portions of fish to drain out. Non-Stick frying pans
have PCB’s and when you cook on them you can get these into your system especially if
you are using metal and scratching up this non-stick plastic coating on your cooking
tools.

Skinnyness Law No. 4: Filter Your Water
The best way to eliminate EDCs from your tap water is an activated carbon water filter.
Available for faucets and pitchers, and as under-the-sink units, these filters remove
most pesticides and industrial pollutants. Check the label to make sure the filter meets
the NSF/American National Standards Institute’s standard 53, indicating that it treats
water for both health and aesthetic concerns. Try The Brita Aqualux ($28, brita.com), Pur
Horizontal faucet filter ($49, purwaterfilter.com) and Kenmore’s under-sink system ($60,
kenmore.com). However, if you have perchlorate (a component of rocket fuel!) in your
water (you can find out by asking your municipal water supplier for a copy of its most
recent water-quality report) you’ll need a reverse osmosis filter. But for every five
gallons of treated water they create per day, they discharge 40 to 90 gallons of
wastewater, so make sure it’s necessary before purchasing one.

Skinnyness Law no. 5: Watch the Time of Day you EAT!
So with all of this knowledge and once you have cleaned out all the pesticides, (
click
here to clean them out totally to start your clean diet lifestyle) why are some people not
losing weight? Another challenge to the simplistic calories-in/calories-out model came
just this month 9/2010. The time of day when mice eat, scientists reported, can greatly
affect weight gain. Mice fed a high-fat diet during their normal sleeping hours gained
more than twice as much weight as mice eating the same type and amount of food
during their normal waking hours, Fred Turek of Northwestern University and
colleagues reported in the journal Obesity. And just as Newbold found, the two groups
did not differ enough in caloric intake or activity levels to account for the difference in
weight gain. Turek suspects that one possible cause of the difference is the disruption
in the animals' circadian rhythms. Genes that govern our daily cycle of sleeping and
waking "also regulate at least 10 percent of the other genes in our cells, including
metabolic genes," says Turek. "Mess up the cellular clock and you may mess up
metabolic rate." That would account for why the mice that ate when they should have
slept gained more weight: the disruption in their clock genes lowered their metabolic
rate, so they burned fewer calories to keep their body running. Studies in people have
linked eating at odd times with weight gain, too.

Mice are all well and good, but many a theory has imploded when results in lab animals
failed to show up in people. Unfortunately, that is not the case with obesogens. In 2005
scientists in Spain reported that the more pesticides children were exposed to as
fetuses, the greater their risk of being overweight as toddlers. And last January
scientists in Belgium found that children exposed to higher levels of PCBs and DDE (the
breakdown product of the pesticide DDT) before birth were fatter than those exposed to
lower levels. Neither study proves causation, but they "support the findings in
experimental animals," says Newbold. They "show a link between exposure to
environmental chemicals … and the development of obesity."

Given the ubiquity of obesogens, traces of which are found in the blood or tissue of
virtually every American, why isn't everyone overweight? For now, all scientists can say
is that even a slight variation in the amounts and timing of exposures might matter, as
could individual differences in physiology. "Even in genetically identical mice," notes
Blumberg, "you get a range of reactions to the same chemical exposure." More
problematic is the question of how to deal with this cause of obesity. If obesogens have
converted more precursor cells into fat cells, or have given you a "thrifty" metabolism
that husbands calories like a famine victim, you face an uphill climb. "It doesn't mean
you can't work out like a demon and strictly control what you eat," says Blumberg, "but
you have to work at it that much harder." He and others are quick to add that obesogens
do not account for all cases of obesity, especially in adults. "I'd like to avoid the
simplistic story that chemicals make you fat," says Blumberg. For instance, someone
who was slim throughout adolescence and then packed on pounds in adulthood
probably cannot blame it on exposure to obesogens prenatally or in infancy: if that were
the cause, the extra fat cells and lower metabolic rate that obesogens cause would
have shown themselves in childhood chubbiness.
This fall, scientists from NIH, the Food and Drug Administration, the Environmental
Protection Agency, and academia will discuss obesogens at the largest-ever
government-sponsored meeting on the topic. "The main message is that obesogens are
a factor that we hadn't thought about at all before this," says Blumberg. But they're one
that could clear up at least some of the mystery of why so many of us put on pounds that
refuse to come off.
